5. GAIFF Review: Cyril Schäublin's Unrest is a Quiet Film of Loud Ideas
Aug 1, 2022 · Unrest is a far more naturalistic film but no less hypnotic or conceptually inventive; no surprise it won an award in this year's Berlinale Encounters.
The best word to describe Unrest is "clever." It isn't on the level of the artisans and thinkers it lovingly portrays—all the graphers (geo, carto, photo) and the ists (social, anarch, horolog, and so on)—but not so far off; and more than enough to be worthy of their story. She soon grows uneasy with the organisation of work and possession in the village and its factory and joins the anarchist worker movement of the local watchmakers. There she meets Piotr Kropotkin, a moony Russian traveller. The two of them meet at a time when new technologies such as time measurement, photography and the telegraph are transforming the social order and anarchist discourse is addressing emerging nationalism. During a walk in the woods, Josephine and Piotr ask themselves whether time, money and the government are not all but fictions.
